4 Things To Do While Unemployed - And Remain Employable

So you lost your job, quit, relocated and got lost in the woods. Whatever it is, (other than retirement) you should still be working to stay employable. If you are retired, shouldn't you be playing shuffleboard or something?

Eating chips and watching MASH reruns is not going to keep you employable. That is the key - Remain employable while you are unemployed. Gaps in employment on resumes do not look good. It isn't a deal-breaker though, especially if you follow some simple advice.

Job Finding Communication

It is 2011. Communication technology is no longer new. It's time to learn to use it. Properly. In a way that helps - not hinders - your career.

E-mail - E-mail is great. E-mail is terrible. Depends how you use it.

  • You're e-mail address is what?
  • First name Dot Last name. First Initial Dot Last name. Something along those lines. When your e-mail is tinaisagoodlover@hotmail.com you are probably not going to get a job. Or at least not one in the restaurant business. Even if you only use your plain jane email for job-seeking purposes. Great. Grand. Wonderful. Be a good lover all you want - just not when trying to get a job.

  • Spell check your email
  • Don't just spell check - read it again. Learn the difference between their, there and they're. Or at least have someone who knows the difference read it. Remember - everything you say, do or write leaves an impression with employers. You want as many good impressions as possible. Sure just because you can't spell doesn't mean you can't cook, but some recruiters may interpret it to mean YOU'RE lazy. Lazy is not good.
