4 Things To Do While Unemployed - And Remain Employable
1. Take a Class
Head over to the local university or community college and enroll in a class. Don't just take a class just to take one though. Think about your weaknesses related your career as a restaurant manager and find a class to help. Management, Business, Finance, Cooking. Whatever it is - make it worthwhile. I can hear it now - you're unemployed - you can't take afford a college class. Look to your local community. Many times community centers and libraries offer classes for little or no money. Don't forget to check with your local Chamber of Commerce as they often host seminars or classes related to management.
2. Stay Up-To-Date
Read. Read. Read. Read blogs (like ours), read industry publications like those listed here under Industry Links. You need to know what is going on in the restaurant world - and be able to talk about it intelligently.
3. Teach a Class
See those places that offer classes listed up there under number 1?? They need people to teach them. Most will be volunteer positions, but they may pay a little. Contact the various groups and tell them you're interested in teaching a class for them - you may be surprised at how willing they are to let you help. Make sure you can learn from the class you are teaching. Often the best way to really know something is to teach it to others.
4. Volunteer
This is one that doesn't necessarily have to be related to your career. Volunteer at a local homeless shelter, animal shelter or on the board of a local not-for-profit. These are all things that can be added to a resume that while not necessarily related to your career, still put another positive on your resume.
